Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a root canal?

Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed, infected, or injured due to trauma.  The most common reasons for inflammation or infection are deep cavities, fillings, or cracks.  If pulp inflammation is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to serious infection.   Root canal treatment involves making a small opening in the top of the tooth, removing the affected pulp, disinfecting the canal and filling the space with an inert material. This procedure is followed by placing a permanent restoration (filling) which allows the tooth to function normally.

Will the procedure be painful?

Dr. Marcello will make every effort to make you comfortable. Our goal is to return you to a normal lifestyle as quickly as possible. Most procedures are pain free due to modern day anesthetics. Pain addressed in an early manner is more manageable than in an emergency situation. Initially, one may feel some sensitivity or the tooth may feel different following treatment, but this will subside in a few days. The biggest predictor of post-operative pain is pre-operative pain

Why Should I save my tooth?

Root canal treatment will often prevent extraction of a tooth which can cause a shift in alignment of teeth.  Maintaining your natural teeth is functionally important as well as economically important.  If indicated, root canal treatment and permanent restoration generally costs less than a bridge or implant.
